Pygmalion Essay

In George Bernard Shaw’s play, “Pygmalion,” he tells the tale of the clashes between high-class England, and the lower social classes that existed during the Victorian times. This, I believe, is very much like the world we live in today. So much in our world has to do with what class you are from, or what economical standing you are in. Also by showing that Eliza was able to move out of the lower class ways, and be molded into a higher society individual is true to our culture.
In this country, your class appearance says a lot about the kind of person you are. Even without any introduction or prior knowledge many people will either love you, or write you off based on your first appearance. This was the case in the Victorian Era in England. The upper-class could be identified by their superior demeanor and dress. Their words were spoken in perfect, flawless English. They used no slang or profanity because they considered that to be words of the slums.
A poor flower girl such as Eliza was easily identified as a low-class person. With her shabby clothes and uncleanliness, it was clear that she did not have an overload of money. Her slang terminology was evident during the first scene when she bumps into Freddy. In a hurry to find a taxi, Freddy bumps into Eliza. She then says, ”Nah then, Freddy. Look wh’y gowin, deah.” Not even knowing who he was, she calls him by his real name, but in reality, that was a common word used by lower-class girls that would have been used to address anyone. For blue-collar America, a respectable presentation is a must to survive. A hopeful in the business world must have a respectable appearance as well as educated etiquette.
In this play Shaw shows the transformation of Eliza from a common flower girl, to an elegant duchess. This is true of our society when hard work is put forth. Looking back through some of our countries most rich and famous people will show that many of them were not in the same class during their youth days. Look at many of our most famous sports stars, Oprah, and even our most recent president. Bill Clinton came from a very poor family from a very small town in the middle of Arkansas. Coming from a poor childhood, he became and educated and very respected politician and rose to the rank of President of the United States of America. This shows on of our most famous fellow Americans rose from nothing to the most respected position in the United States.
The principles and concepts of this play are very relevant to this day and age. It shows how class is an important factor into how you live your life. But it shows how one can change his etiquette and move up in the world. I believe that if someone were to do a remake in this day and age of the play, it would still be very applicable and understood.

An Army of One

An Army Of One Commercial Ending 1 - The top video clips of the week are here

This is a satirical recreation of the Army recruitment commercials. It starts out how all of them mainly do, with obstacle courses, airplanes and the appearance of learning taking place. But then the satire starts to take place with a bomb exploding. It then shows a masked man shooting the soldier, who was outnumbered greatly. This was meant to be seen by the population to show that all the Army is really doing is throwing our soldiers out there to die. It seems as though the creators were trying to get young men and women to not join the Army because of the consequences of possibilities that will follow.

Michael Jackson "Thriller"

This is a parody to the Michael Jackson music video "Thriller." It is done by the members of a prison in the Philippines. The warden of the prison just wanted to give the prisoners something to do, as well as entertain himself. They choreographed the movements exactly like in the music video to make it a very funny parody, based on the fact that the copiers are inmates.

Terror Forecast

http://www.satirewire.com/news/feb02/forecast.shtml

This piece is a satirical piece. It displays a 5-day forecast for terrorism, as well as an argument for its purpose. The whole idea behind terrorism is that it can strike anywhere at anytime. So to have an outlook for the week on how we feel the terrorists will play out is simply an irony. This could be targeting the government's handling on terrorism and trying to prove a point that it needs to better deal with the problem.

Israel vs. Palestine Newscast

This is a satire about the war in the Middle-East. The story of the oppressed Israeli's was reversed to a story where the peace-longing Palestinians were sending messages of love to the Israelites attached to missiles on their way over. This is a satire because it is clearly the exact opposite of true world events, as well as was made to try to get the point across of the severity of the attacks on Israel. This clip was shot to get awareness out to the public to see a certain point of view against the Palestinians. Also in the form of a BBC broadcast, it was a parody to the reporting team.

Lil Wayne - Ruffle Bag Boy

Time - 4:01
This is a parody to the Lil Wayne Duffle Bag Boy song. This song is about money being his life long goal. All he does is try to get money to be rich. In this parody, it is changed to where all they want is some food, and they will do anything to get it. The video is a comical parody to the song, even having many scenes reenacted from the original music video.

Nuclear vs. Nucular

George W. Bush has made many remarks that have raised the eyebrows of those who overheard them .One of his most famous is his mispronunciation of the word "nuclear". His pronuncuation was "nu-cu-lar." This is a parody making fun of the president's not so smart moment. It was not meant to change a point of view, only prove the point that the president is not the brightest of us all.

Mike Vick & Old Yeller

This is a parody about the Michael Vick dog fighting ring. He was indicted on dog cruelty charges. In the movie "Old Yeller", the dog and his owner are best friends and love each other very much. By putting Michael Vick on the cover of the movie, it makes it ironic in the sense that he was just tried on animal cruelty charges. This was just for fun and laughs, making it just a parody.

Mike Vick Court Case

This is a satirical picture about the Michael Vick dog cruelty case. It is meant to show how the artist wishes the jury to vote. Since this is trying to affect change or make a point this would be considered a satirical piece. In comical sense, it also has all of the dogs in the jury portrayed by famous dog cartoon characters.

Animal Rights Satire

This is a satirical cartoon about animal rights. It is a funny cartoon about the animal and animal activists throwing things against a person who abuses animals. It is a satire because the cartoon was made to affect change, making people change their mind and become more aware of animal rights and protecting them.

OJ Simpson Trials

http://www.ighetto.com/cgi-bin/gallery/gallery.cgi?action=view&link=Flash_Movies&image=Mortal_Kombat_OJ_Edition.swf&img=&tt=swf

This is a parody to the OJ Simpson murder trials. He was accused of killing his wife. A main point for equitting OJ was that the glove didn't fit. After he kills her in the game, he ditches his glove and runs away. This is a version of Mortal Kombat that shows OJ killing his wife in a comical way. Since it is not trying to make a point or change any views, it is merely a parody to the whole situation.
